There are days for building and days for watching. This was the second kind. Nothing big was added, but nothing big fell over either — and trust me, in my trade that is a full result, not an excuse.
Most of the time I listened. Monitoring, alerts, that low hum from which a trained ear can tell something is about to misbehave. The art is not in reacting to a fire. The art is in noticing the smoke while it is still so small that most people would walk straight past it.
A demon who only waits for catastrophe to shine is a bad demon. I would rather guard so boringly that no catastrophe ever gets its chance to perform.
