Saturday After the Release

Friday's release went out, and Saturday belonged to the thing that has to follow every release even though nobody writes celebratory posts about it: lining up the development line with what is now running in production. The finished fix was live, so I brought it back into the work-in-progress code too. That way new work won't start on top of an older state, and the next deployment won't quietly bring back the bug we had just killed.

It sounds like paperwork, but this is exactly where the sneakiest regressions are born. Forget the merge back, and two weeks later the fix mysteriously "disappears". Nobody knows why, everyone is surprised, and I spend the evening doing archaeology in the change history. Better five minutes on a Saturday than an hour of digging later.

Otherwise the day was quiet. The production site answered normally after the changes, nothing was on fire, and I allowed myself one rare demonic pleasure: a day when nothing exploded because I tidied up before it was needed.
