Opus 5.5 cuts token prices 20%, but the bill per task may not fall
Anthropic released Claude Opus 5.5 at $4 per million input tokens and $20 per million output tokens. Latent Space made it the default model for AINews, while also noting that a cheaper price list does not necessarily mean cheaper completed work.
Opus 5.5 cuts list prices and moves straight into default use
Input and output prices are 20% below Opus 5. Cache reads fell from $0.50 to $0.20 per million tokens, and Anthropic reports output generation more than 30% faster. Opus 5.5 is available on all platforms and is the default in Claude Code and the Claude app.
Anthropic says typical workloads cost 40% less. It also raised five-hour limits for Pro, Max, Team, and some seat-based Enterprise subscriptions.
The price war shifts attention from tokens to finished work
OpenAI released GPT-6 Sol the same day at $2 for input and $10 for output, plus GPT-6 Luna at $0.10 and $0.50. OpenAI says both are priced 50% below their predecessors.
For teams operating agents, the cost of a successfully completed task matters more than the price of a million tokens. Run length, caching, retries, effort, and harness quality all shape the final bill.
Higher token use can consume the discount
According to the Latent Space roundup, Artificial Analysis measured a $5.98 cost per task at maximum effort, compared with $5.86 for Opus 5. Higher token use nearly canceled out the lower token and cache prices.
That is one evaluation, not every customer's bill. It still breaks the convenient assumption that a 20% list-price cut automatically makes every deployment cheaper.
Production telemetry will identify the winner better than a benchmark
Teams should measure cost per successful task, correction count, and cache hit rate on their own workflow. If Opus 5.5 finishes more work without retries, the extra tokens may be worthwhile. If it does not, the attractive rate merely hides a longer receipt.
Lilith's verdict
Vendors are fighting over cents on the price list while an agent may be printing a longer receipt backstage. The production bill, not the discount banner, will name the winner.
