Codex got a $230 keyboard as OpenAI tests hardware for agent work

According to TechCrunch, OpenAI has launched Codex Micro, a $230 light-up keyboard co-designed with Work Louder. It is meant to pair with Codex and help users manage multiple agentic coding tasks.

OpenAI is selling a physical controller for Codex agents

The device includes Agent Keys that show agent status, customizable Command Keys for frequent actions, a joystick for launching workflows and a dial for reasoning level. Control and customization run through the ChatGPT desktop app.

OpenAI told TechCrunch that Codex Micro is a limited-run collaboration. That matters: it does not look like a mass-market product. It looks more like a physical prototype for managing several agents at once.

The real question is dispatching work, not selling a keyboard

If agents start running multiple tasks in parallel, ordinary UI gets stressed fast. The user does not need another chat window. The user needs to know which agent is waiting, which one is computing, which one needs approval and where an expensive mistake may happen.

That makes Codex Micro more interesting than its price tag. Physical keys and status lights suggest OpenAI is thinking about agents as a fleet of processes, not a single conversation.

A limited gadget cannot solve trust or code quality

The weak point is obvious. A $230 keyboard does not solve trust, audit or code quality. Without permissions, tests and clear approval points, it is a nicer surface over the same risk.

TechCrunch also places the launch inside OpenAI's broader hardware story, including Apple's lawsuit alleging trade secret theft, which OpenAI denies. That makes Codex Micro a reputational signal as well as a peripheral.

The signal is whether the controller moves back into software

The thing to watch is whether Codex Micro ideas appear inside the ChatGPT desktop app, Codex or IDEs without special hardware. If they do, the keyboard will be the prop. The real product will be OpenAI's control layer for agentic work.
