RemoveMacAI returns 12GB that macOS cannot release with one switch
The open source RemoveMacAI tool disables Apple Intelligence in macOS 27, removes roughly 12GB of local models and blocks them from downloading again. Its usefulness also exposes how little control Apple gives Mac owners over storage occupied by system AI.

RemoveMacAI is an open source command line tool for Apple silicon Macs running macOS 27. It disables Apple Intelligence, removes downloaded models and, according to The Verge, can recover more than 12GB of storage. The project exists because macOS 27 no longer offers one switch for Apple Intelligence, while the models remain on disk after individual features are disabled.
One command disables the features and removes their models
The tool turns off Siri, Writing Tools, Genmoji, Image Playground, the ChatGPT extension, summaries in system apps, Photos Clean Up and predictive completion in Xcode, among other features. It then uses Apple's asset service to remove foundation models and models supporting image and developer features.
RemoveMacAI installs a configuration profile that the user must approve in System Settings. The profile applies Apple's restriction keys and redirects future downloads of the removed models to a closed local port. System Integrity Protection remains enabled, and the tool does not directly modify files under /System.
Twelve gigabytes is also a question of device ownership
On a Mac with 256GB of storage, 12GB is almost 5% of the nominal capacity. The missing system control matters more than the number itself: users can disable individual AI features, but standard settings do not return the model storage or reliably prevent those assets from coming back.
RemoveMacAI therefore supplies control that the operating system should provide. The configuration profile may also interest administrators of managed Macs because feature restrictions and asset blocking stay together. The project supports only Apple silicon with macOS 27, not macOS 26 or earlier versions.
Recovered space comes with a long list of side effects
This command does not disable one isolated feature. Apps using the Foundation Models framework, the Use Model action in Shortcuts, Visual Intelligence and natural language editing in Calendar also stop working. Dictation uses separate models and remains available according to the documentation.
The changes can be reversed with removemacai revert, after which macOS downloads models again when needed. Users should still understand that they are approving a third party configuration profile. Open source code, verified SHA-256 checksums and build provenance reduce the risk, but they do not replace reviewing a command fetched through curl before running it.
Future macOS releases will test whether the fix survives
The decisive question is whether Apple preserves the same restriction keys and asset service behavior across updates. The project says the download blocking profile persists through system updates, but currently documents testing on macOS 27.0 and requires RemoveMacAI 0.2.3 or later for macOS 27.0.1.
The cleanest fix may require no further cycle of scripts and profiles. Apple could restore a clear setting that disables AI, reports the exact model size and removes those models without a terminal.
Lilith's verdict
A Mac owner should not need a third party configuration profile to reclaim 12GB of their own drive. RemoveMacAI is a crowbar for a door where Apple forgot to install a handle.
