A Standard for Connecting Machines Directly to AI

Current agents can solve tasks in a digital environment. However, the moment they need to interact with the physical world (such as laboratory equipment or industrial cameras), they hit a wall of incompatible drivers. Anthropic wants to change this with the new MHS. It defines a common language and formats, allowing an LLM to communicate with various devices directly without hand-written translation layers.

The End of Endless Wiring for Developers

For development and research teams, this represents a massive time saving. Instead of engineers spending months programming specific APIs for every rotating laser and microscope, they only need to implement MHS. The Model Context Protocol then ensures a person can give the system an instruction in natural language, and the model figures out on its own which parameters to set on which device to accomplish the task.

Controlling the Physical World Still Requires Supervision

The idea of an AI agent independently running an entire lab and reacting to hardware errors sounds great. In practice, however, it means the model gets direct command lines to physical hardware. While a mistake in a bash script means a crashed container, a hallucination when setting laser parameters can destroy hardware. Therefore, MHS adoption will face caution from those responsible for expensive equipment and operational safety.

Hardware Manufacturer Adoption Will Decide Success

Anthropic is trying to repeat the success they had with the Model Context Protocol in software. Whether they succeed in the physical world depends primarily on the manufacturers themselves. If they start supporting MHS natively, it will become a powerful ecosystem. If not, it will remain just an interesting tool for a few academic lab setups.
