Claude Science pulls fragmented research work into one environment

Claude Science is, in Anthropic’s words, an “AI workbench for scientists”: it pulls scattered tools and datasets into a single environment and generates figures and visuals. The company frames the launch around AI’s potential to significantly speed up scientific discovery and points to a long list of biotech and pharma customers already using Claude.

Making its own drugs is an unusual move even among frontier labs

Head of life sciences Eric Kauderer-Abrams said the company will focus on treatments for “neglected” diseases. OpenAI, Amazon and Google all sell science platforms, but no major frontier lab has publicly committed to developing drugs itself. Anthropic ends up in a peculiar position: it sells software to companies it now competes with, and it enters a race that already includes AI-first drug hunters such as Insilico and Isomorphic Labs.

Details are thin and experts are cooling expectations

Anthropic has not said which diseases come first or how it will handle lab work, clinical trials and manufacturing. Experts interviewed by The Verge note that “AI drug discovery” is a catchall phrase covering dozens of uses, and that high-quality public experimental data about how compounds behave in the body is scarce. Professor Frank von Delft put it bluntly: models “haven’t yet come close to making experiments unnecessary”.

Wet labs and Big Pharma hires show this is more than marketing

Over the past year Anthropic has been hiring biologists, building its own wet labs and, according to academics quoted by The Verge, poaching people from Big Pharma and top universities. Yet taking a new drug through clinical trials routinely takes more than 10 years, and no AI-designed candidate has cleared FDA approval so far. Anthropic is buying a ticket into a game where results are measured in decades, not quarters.
