Google Vids moves workplace video from slides to digital doubles
Google is adding personal AI avatars, Gemini Omni video tools and step by step edits to Vids. For companies, that means faster internal video production and a new governance layer around face, voice and consent.
Vids gets account bound avatars and SynthID watermarking
TechCrunch reports that Google announced a Google Vids update that lets users create a digital avatar from a selfie and voice recording. The avatar is meant to look and sound like the account holder, is tied to a Google account and is invisibly watermarked with SynthID.
Google is also bringing Gemini Omni to Vids. Users can combine a written prompt with reference images, swap backgrounds, fix lighting and add effects. Omni supports step by step edits, so users do not have to restart after every change.
Workspace turns AI video generation into company infrastructure
The original Vids aimed at AI assisted work presentations. The new avatars and conversational editing push it closer to tools like HeyGen, Synthesia, Captions and D-ID, only embedded in Google Workspace.
When video generation is part of a bundle the company already pays for and manages, adoption does not need another separate purchase. HR training and internal announcements can move into the regular workflow.
The sensitive part is permission to use a face
Google notes limits to select regions and users aged 18 and older. That is a crucial detail because a personal avatar is a biometrically and reputationally sensitive copy of an employee.
SynthID helps with content provenance, but it does not solve the whole operational problem. The company needs to know who can create an avatar, who can use it and what happens after the employee leaves.
The real test will be admin controls and audit logs
The next signal will not just be video quality. It will be rights management, usage logging, the ability to quickly disable an avatar and clear rules for regions where the feature is allowed to run.
If Google handles governance, Vids can be a practical video tool for companies. If it underestimates it, Workspace will get a very convenient HR incident generator.
Lilith's verdict
A workplace avatar is an ID badge with a mouth. Once it starts speaking for an employee, a nice UI is not enough. Someone has to guard the door.
