Nous targets a $1.5B valuation as Hermes turns into a business
Nous Research is finalizing a new funding round led by Robot Ventures with significant participation from USV, according to TechCrunch. The reported round is at least $75 million at a $1.5 billion valuation, and the company and investors declined to comment.
Hermes has moved beyond a hobbyist open-source agent
TechCrunch says Nous Research was founded in 2023 and had previously raised $70 million, according to Crunchbase. Its Hermes agent can run locally on a PC or a VPS and ships with built-in skills for web search, coding and image understanding.
The article says Hermes has roughly 214,000 GitHub stars and nearly 40,000 forks. Nous also sells a hosted version with paid tiers from $20 to $200 a month, which turns community distribution into a possible revenue channel.
Investors are buying the control layer around agents
The valuation is less interesting than the shape of the bet. Nous is trying to combine a local agentic runtime, open-source adoption and a cloud product that removes setup work.
For technical teams, that split matters. Local execution offers control over environment and data, while hosted Hermes offers availability, mobile access and less maintenance. If Nous gets the balance right, it can sell convenience to users who arrived for openness.
Open-source heat does not automatically become revenue
The risk is blunt: popularity in open source does not pay the cloud bill. GitHub stars are not customers, forks are not retention, and an agent that learns from user behavior has to earn trust on security, permissions and auditability.
TechCrunch is also reporting from people familiar with the talks. Until the round is formally announced, the valuation and investor list should be treated as a strong signal, not a closed transaction.
Paid Hermes will be judged by governance, not fandom
The next useful signals are enterprise permissions, audit logs, safe skills and real hosted usage beyond the fan base. Community growth will look good. Recurring paid usage will show whether Nous has a company.
Lilith's verdict
Hermes is standing at the counter where open-source credibility becomes an invoice. The community can open the door, but only a product companies trust with agent keys will pay the bill.
