Silent scraping moves to personal accounts

Google is gradually deploying a new activity setting called Search Services History. It defaults to enabled and grants the company permission to use media from your searches for AI training. This covers images uploaded to Google Lens, audio from voice translation, and interactions in Gemini Live. Users who previously paused Web and App Activity globally seem to have it disabled by default, but everyone else has to proactively opt out.

The end of walking the line on the public web

Until now, Google walked a fine line by scraping the public web. This policy change opens the floodgates to vast amounts of data inside personal accounts of millions of users. While Google guarantees that paid enterprise Workspace data will not be used for training, it is aggressively monetizing the free consumer tier. The method of gaining consent, a pre checked box buried in settings menus, relies entirely on user inertia.

Opt out models reveal data desperation

From a market perspective, this is a clear signal. Public text and image data are exhausted or locked behind paywalls. The competitive edge for the next generation of models relies on private interactions. A photo of a living room uploaded to Lens to identify furniture, or a voice query via Gemini, holds far more value for contextual reasoning than another scraped Wikipedia article. Google is betting that the opt out friction is high enough to keep the data flowing.

When will European regulators step in

The real test of this strategy will be the reaction from European data protection authorities. They recently forced Meta to pause similar opt out models for training on user posts. Whether Google survives GDPR scrutiny will dictate how aggressively other tech giants tap into the personal data of their daily active users.
