AI companies need quality data from the war

OpenAI, AIRPPU, and WAN-IFRA have launched a program to support Ukrainian news organizations. The goal is to strengthen innovation, resilience, and independent journalism. Ukrainian media will get access to tools and know-how on how to integrate AI into their newsrooms.

Good PR for AI that otherwise steals content

For OpenAI, this is an obvious attempt to show a friendly face to publishers. At a time when The New York Times and other media are suing it for training on their data without a license, any such alliance is useful. Moreover, Ukraine is bulletproof from a PR perspective.

Who will own the resulting models

The promise of innovation is nice, but the question is who will really benefit from the data that passes through these tools. OpenAI claims it does not use API data for training, but the line between helping and extracting local context is thin.

Further similar partnerships will set the trend

We will see if OpenAI launches a similar program elsewhere. If it does, it will become a standard tool to buy influence and data where normal commercial licensing does not work or is too expensive.

Lilith's verdict

It is a smart geopolitical investment in data. Whoever puts the tools into the hands of war reporters is de facto shaping how the whole world will report on that battlefield for the next decade.
