The founders of Google's infrastructure are going into science

Google is losing part of its most experienced core. Jeff Dean and Sanjay Ghemawat, the creators of MapReduce and the pillars of Google's infrastructure itself, are leaving DeepMind. Along with other experts, they are founding the Discovery Loop project, a public benefit corporation in which Google will invest. Their new goal is no longer to fight in the race for the best language model, but to use AI to automate scientific discovery and engineering.

The chase for LLMs is driving pure research out of corporations

This exodus is a clear signal to the engineering scene. Working on frontier models like Gemini is now more about routine, compute-heavy engineering and tuning than fundamental research. Elite researchers who want to solve entirely new problems are finding that the inside of giant structures optimized for beating OpenAI is no longer the right environment for them. The founding of Discovery Loop as an external entity shows that not even Google can maintain research diversity under one roof.

Google secured its influence through investment

The founding of Discovery Loop is not exactly a rebellion against Google. On the contrary, the structure as a public benefit corporation, with Google as an investor and cloud provider, suggests a mutually beneficial compromise. Researchers gain freedom, while Google retains access to potential breakthroughs without having to defend them in budgets against immediate competition from Meta or Anthropic.

The real signal to watch going forward is not that people are leaving Google. What will be important is whether this pattern also spreads to other companies like OpenAI or Anthropic.
