Cognition buys Poke because agents now need a social layer

TechCrunch reports that Cognition acquired The Interaction Company of California, the maker of Poke, in a deal valuing the startup in the low nine figures, meaning at least $100 million. Poke’s interaction model and personality will be brought into Cognition’s coding agent Devin. Cognition says Poke will gain faster and more reliable infrastructure in return.

Devin is buying a way to talk, not just another feature

Poke is an assistant people use through familiar channels such as Apple Messages, WhatsApp and Telegram. It relies on app integrations, recipes and a more familiar tone. TechCrunch quotes co-founder Marvin von Hagen saying people prefer co-workers with personality over robots.

For a coding agent, that matters more than it sounds. Devin should not merely return a diff. It needs to ask questions, wait for approval, explain tradeoffs and sometimes say the task does not make sense. Interaction style becomes a product capability, not decoration.

Personality is becoming an interface for trust

Agent coverage has focused on models, benchmarks and task completion. But during long work, people also need to understand the agent’s intent and feel safe letting it take the next step.

Cognition is acknowledging that a better model is not enough. If Devin is meant to feel like a colleague, it needs consistent tone, relationship memory, good timing and the ability not to be annoying. Those are soft traits only until they decide team adoption.

A friendly tone must not hide permissions and accountability

The risk is obvious: the more human an agent sounds, the easier it is to forgive vagueness. Slang and jokes are fine until they obscure which command ran, which data was read and who owns the change in the repository.

Devin will prove the deal if personality reduces friction

The signal to watch is whether Poke improves onboarding, ongoing approvals and returning to unfinished work inside Devin. If it does, the acquisition makes sense. If personality means happier messages over the same limits, it is an expensive skin on an agent.
