Court ruled the blacklist by the Trump administration as illegal retaliation against Anthropic

Anthropic refused blanket military deployment

The dispute began this winter when the Pentagon decided to renegotiate contracts with AI companies to allow military use of artificial intelligence for any lawful use. While most other labs agreed, Anthropic stood by its red lines. It refused use for mass surveillance of Americans and for the development of lethal autonomous weapons.

Punishment followed in the form of blacklisting

After CEO Dario Amodei publicly defended the company's stance, the Trump administration labeled Anthropic a supply chain risk. This gave them the ability to remove it from contracts and replace it with more willing competition, including OpenAI and Google.

National security must not cover retaliation

Judge Rita F. Lin ruled that the government misused the institution of national security to punish the company for its public stance. The verdict clearly states that labeling a company a threat without material evidence and because of hostile manner through the press is a classic example of illegal retaliation violating free speech.

Future contracts will be watched

The proof of how much the verdict will change real market conditions will not be legal proclamations. It will be decided by whether Anthropic manages to regain access to army contracts in those segments that do not violate its internal ethical rules.
